Spider Reports

This term our focus for writing has been writing information reports.  Through this genre the children have been learning the importance of finding interesting facts and writing clear notes about spiders.  They have then looked at grouping their information together, using sub titles to help with this and finally writing their ideas into paragraphs.

We decided that our reports needed some art to go with them for our display so the children squirted white P.V.A glue in the formation of a web on black paper.  Once this was dry the children then chose 3 different colours of chalk pastel and coloured in the web.  They look fantastic hanging proudly with their reports in the classroom.

We hope you enjoy reading some of the reports and watching the slideshow of our art.

Spiders
If you are interested in spiders you should read this information.
All spiders are carnivores which means that they attack and eat other living creature’s. If we didn't have spider’s, flies would be everywhere.

Finding a mate
Finding a mate can be quite risky for a male spider. Male’s are often much smaller than the female so a hungry female may mistake him for a meal.

What spiders eat
Some spider’s eat small bug’s medium bug’s and some even eat birds.
The second biggest spider in the world is the bird eating spider. It is as big as a dinner plate.
The biggest indoor spider web is 5.8 metres wide.

Spiderlings
It is not until the spring that the spider egg’s finally hatch. At first the tiny spiders stay inside the cocoon. The newly hatched spiders have no colour and can not make a web or feed themselves.

Don’t harm spiders because they need a life like us.

Spiders

If you are afraid of arachnids you won’t like this report.  Arachnids are a two parted freak with 8 legs.  This is why it is not an insect.  An insect has six legs and a spider has 8.  An insect has three parts to its body and a spider has two. The legs move like a team, the first pair forwards and the next pair, right to the forth pair, over and over again.

Spiders have bad eye-sight but it can sense if something gets caught in its web.  It can strike its victim to its web with silk from its spindles.  If you look at the back of the spider you will see spike looking things, these are spindles.  Spiders inject venom into its victim.  It turns his insides into liquid then the spider sucks it out.  The spider only eats liquid food.

If a spider bites you, it will cause an irritation and leave a white spot.

Look after spiders because this will stop the population of flies.

Spectatular Spiders

Spiders, I think are one of the most intriguing bugs of all the bugs because they can only eat liquid food and some spiders can see ultra violet light.

Dangers that Spiders Face
Birds and wasps both kill spiders but if a spider loses its legs it can grow it back and spiders can camouflage as they hide.  They can scuttle very fast.  Spiders have hairs on their body and legs that sense movement.

What spiders bodies look like
Spiders have two spinnerets at the back of their body for spinning webs.  They only have two body sections; the thorax and abdomen.  Spiders do have eight eyes but they are not very good at seeing.  They also have very powerful fangs that inject venom into its prey.  They also have eight legs (Wow that’s a lot!)

Habitat
Spiders can live anywhere in the world including in the water.  Spiders that live underwater live inside a bubble so that they can breathe but no spider lives in Antarctica or the Arctic because it is too cold for them.

Spiders Prey
All spiders are carnivores so they eat meat.  They eat flies and other little insects that get stuck in their webs.  This is how they catch their prey:  They make a web then they hide.  A little insect comes along and gets stuck in the web.  The spiders scampers out of its hiding place and sticks its fangs into the little insect which injects venom that paralyzes the little insect then the spider spits on the little insect that turns its insides into liquid and then they slurp the little insects insides up.

Now you have seen all about spiders so now you are very smart.  You know about spiders.

spiders
Come with me and I will show you an incredible creature that spins webs and crawls side to side in your hause. I will tell you now so just sit down and relax. These incredible creatures are spiders. Spiders have oil on their body to keep the spider from sticking on to its own web.

what spiders eat
spider are not able to chew so they only eat liquid food. spiders catch their prey in a web.

Arachnids
Arachnids are creatures with two body segments, eight legs no wings or antennae. Spiders are not insect they are arachnids.

So we have to look after spiders or there will be flies everywhere! But if we have spiders they can eat the flies so look after spiders.

Amazing 3D Insects!

We now have our wonderful 3D insects up in our classroom and they are looking fabulous!!

This is how we created them:

We first had to create the shape of the bodies using newspaper and ALOT of masking tape!
Next we put two layers of paper-mache all over the body to help hold the shape.
Once the paper-mache was dry we were able to attach the legs by using straws with wire in them.  The wire helped to hold the shape of the legs.  We needed to add on another layer of paper-mache around the legs to make them strong.
Finally once it was all dry we could PAINT!
We looked carefully at photographs to ensure our colours were as real as possible.
We added on the wings and antennae and this is what we created!
